1. Residential Program:
“Aasha Deep” is the half-way home residential treatment and rehabilitation centre of Maryknoll Nepal and is situated at Nayapati, Sundarijal about 15 kilometers from Kathmandu City. It has the capacity of accommodating 40 patients. The treatment
and care of the patients are based on the principle of a “Therapeutic Community”.
We provide service to patients with psychotic disorders, mood and some neurotic disorder, mental retardation, behavioral problems, alcohol related problems, dementia etc.
Services provided in Aasha Deep residential center:
1. Short and long term stay depending on the nature of the illness.
2. Regular visit from a Psychiatrist.
3. Occupational and Vocational therapy activities.
4. Follow-up home visits of those discharged from Aasha Deep.
5. Family Meetings (Provide moral support, Share experiences and feeling, Counseling and raise awareness)
2. Day Care Program:
Maryknoll Nepal runs day-care centers in Kathmandu valley for the patients who have received treatment from Aasha Deep and are rehabilitated with their families. Most of the patients do not have a job or occupation. They spend their time at home doing nothing. These centers are open five days a week from 09.00 to 16.00 hours. Participation
in the centers keeps the patients engaged in some group activities which prevent relapse, encourages them to be compliant with medication, makes them sociable, and encourages them to function as independently as possible. It also reduces the burden on the family. Each day care center can accommodate about 20 patients. At present, there are centers in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. Each unit has one medical personnel and one social worker trained in psychiatry. The staff also visit the patients’ homes to asses their situation.
Services Provided in Day Care Center:
1. 3 months to 1 year enrollment depending on the nature of their illness and rehabilitation.
2. Monthly assessment of the patients by a visiting psychiatrist.
3. Occupational and Vocational therapy activities.
4. Follow-up home visits.
5. Case studies.
6. Group activities
7. Family Meetings (Provide moral support, Share experiences and feeling, Counseling and raise awareness)
3. Outreach Program:
Patients from different parts of the country are admitted to Maryknoll Nepal. Once they are discharged, it is very difficult for them, especially the poor and marginalized, to come or be brought to Kathmandu for follow-up. Free mobile mental health clinics are being conducted once a month since January 2003 in the Eastern, Mid and Western part of the country. This service is provided by a team including a psychiatrist, a psychiatric nurse and a community social worker.

1. Free Psychiatric consultation and check up
2. Free medication as per need
3. Family support and counseling
4. Examine newly detected cases and
5. Increase awareness about mental illnesses and available resources.
Maryknoll Nepal has a provision for supporting the family members who are from very low economic condition. Family welfare program supports fulfilling the basic and simple requirements of daily livelihood to the needy families including free and regular medication to their mentally ill members.
5. Public Awareness:
Maryknoll Nepal utilizes a variety of media to reach a broad range of people within society with the aim of making the public aware about mental health issues and related stigma. Street plays and rallies, Talk programs, Awareness classes in schools and in the community, distribution of IEC material are the regular activities for creating public awareness.
6. Home Visits:
Follow-up Home visits keeps us informed about the condition of the patients at home. It has been an important activity to counsel the family and to prevent relapse. It helps us maintain an accurate record of the patients.
